1. One Resume and Cover Letter Never Does the Trick. There is no such thing as a universal resume and cover letter. Recruiters are definitely hip to job applicants who recycle the same, stale resume and cover letter. Don't fall into the "lazy" trap. Have several documents that are updated and relevant to the functions of the job you seek.
2. Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire: Overembellishing Your Skills. Lying on your resume will only put you in the hot seat later should you be lucky enough to land the position. Too many people have lost their jobs over the skills or experiences they claim to have had. Don't be one of them! Instead, emphasize the talents you rightfully posess and the benefits you are poised to make if employed. Be forthcoming in an interview if you don't have certain skills and you'll be shocked at how impressed recruiters will be with your honesty.
3. Experience From 20 Years Ago. Keeping your resume updated does not mean rewriting your bullets to better convey your job experience from many, many years ago. Unless the skills from that past experience is best adaptable to the current job you want, erase those cobwebbed experiences from your distant past.
4. Bridging the Gaps in Your Employment. If you were unemployed for a whole year, don't simply increase your experience at an old employer by that one year. A quick phone call to an old employer can expose you easily. Unless you were literally sitting on the couch, start thinking about sharing what you've learned or accomplished during your year off. You can address these points in a cover letter or during the interview.
5. Leave Your Hobbies Off Your Resume. Love snowboarding, exercising and reading romance novels? That's great; that is, for an online dating site! There is one exception. List hobbies that will add to your candidacy. For example, if you enjoy skiing and want to work for an extreme sports mag, listing that hobby may very well make you more appealing to that employer. For the rest of us, in order to evoke a professional image, stick to your valuable work experience and how the skills you have will prove most beneficial to a potential employer.
